Run for the Cure - Oct 3

I decided that I would focus my fundraising efforts to the BCA run this year. I only like to ask for support for one event a year, but it you missed donating to the BCA run and would like to donate to the Run for the Cure instead, you can do so on my personal fundraising page at http://www.runforthecure.com/site/TR?px=1004992&pg=personal&fr_id=1101.

This will be the 10th year that the JUST DOING IT team of survivors has participated in the Run for the Cure.

No Pink for Profit - Run for the Cure team

I'm passing this on from Laurie K's blog. She's looking for Ottawa women to join her Run for the Cure team.
---------------------------------------------------------
Ottawa women friends and family,

Last week end, my friend Cathy Remus and I were talking about doing the Run for the Cure on October 3rd. I suggested forming a team named something along the lines of "We hate pink crap but we hate breast cancer even more."

Elegant slogans were never my forte.

Cathy reminded me that the brilliant Karin Jordan had already come up with "No Pink for Profit." I think this is perfect and I have registered a team with that name. Want to join me? We need ten women (anyone can participate but I'd really like to form a women's team) and you can run it or walk it, raise money or not.

All it would involve on your part would be registering, raising money if you want (or just paying the registration fee) meeting at the start of the run to get your team t-shirt and then either walking or runnning 5k at your pace. Then, as many of us who want to could meet up at the end and go out for a yummy breakfast.

I have a bit of an agenda here, other than the exercise, friendship and a good cause. How cool would it be to have a really large group of women wearing "No Pink for Profit" on their Run for the Cure t-shirts? And if the name is rejected by run organizers (which I truly hope doesn't happen), we have another opportunity for education.

So, what say you? Please feel free to forward this message to any women you know. I want to cast as wide a net as possible.

Laurie

Look ma, I planted a tree!

When you raise a certain level of money for the Run for the Cure, they let you select a prize. One of the prizes I chose last year was to have a tree planted. I forgot all about it until I received this message today.

Hi Christine,

Thank you for choosing to support the 2009 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. You’ll remember that as part of your participation you earned Run Rewards and chose to plant a tree in our forest of hope.

I’m delighted to tell you that your tree will be planted by Tree Canada in Kamloops British Columbia during May 2010.

Your tree will be a lovely Douglas Fir a hearty evergreen tree that will thrive in this community which has been devasted by wildfires, wind storms and the mountain pine beetle.

You are helping hope grow in two remarkable ways; your participation in the Run inspires hope for the 1 in 9 Canadian women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. And your tree inspires hope for a greener, brighter and cleaner future for all of us!

Thank you for helping to create a future without breast cancer and we look forward to seeing you on October 3rd for the 2010 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

Just Doing It

Here is a picture of the award given to the Just Doing It team at the Run for the Cure. I don't think we're supposed to all run up on the stage when we win, but we've been doing it for 9 years in a row, so why stop now? That's me in the middle wearing the bright pink jacket.

The Run for the Cure

I intended to walk the Run for the Cure today, but I got carried away with the excitement of the crowd and started out running, probably to prove to myself that I could. I could not.

I did a combination of walking and snail running, crossing the finish line in just under 38 minutes. For those of you who don’t run, that’s an incredibly slow time, but I ended up running much more of it than I would have thought I could.

As always, I was moved by the thousands of names that participants carried on their shirts. There was a wall of hope covered in signs that said that people were running for their sister, their mother, their friend, all women, themselves.

The Just Doing It team once again took the prize for the highest amount collected by a women’s community team. Year after year this team of survivors raises money and participates in the run. Year after year more women are diagnosed. But the women on my team and the enthusiasm of the crowd continues to give me hope that eventually there will be a cure. Until then, I'll continue to run, walk and/or crawl.

Just Doing It update

Sylvia, one of our Just Doing It co-captains, sent out this message to the team:

As of this morning we are 3rd top team nationally! What a feat given the fact that an article in the paper this morning said donations were down for this run. Congratulations!

Thank you to all of you who contributed to this achievement. Tomorrow is the big day and we plan to cross the finish line upright & smiling.

Update on Just Doing It

Our team has raised $17,649 so far and my piece of that is $2,630. Only a few more days to go. (Thank you to "anonymous" for your donation).

Today was the 100 Man Run. We had a police escort from the police station through downtown Ottawa to City Hall. It was a great warmup for the event on Sunday.I think I would make a good motorcycle cop, don't you?

100 Man Run Spa Day

I was fortunate enough to be invited to participate in a "spa day" at the Saab Salon yesterday, along with a number (20?) of other cancer 'thrivers'.

Some women got new hair styles:

Some women were treated to nail services:
The people at Saab pampered us, fed us, and generally made us feel like queens-for-a-day.

In the picture below, Rita is displaying a quilt made for her using all of the t-shirts she has worn in past Run for the Cure events. What a great idea!Saab Salon Spa
